Attendance:

WCPSS Policy #6000.4 (http://www.wcpss.net/policy-files/series/policies/6000-bp.html) and NC General Statue 1153-378 require parents/guardians to furnish a signed note giving the reason for a student absence. A student, who attends school for only part of the day, is counted absent for the day unless the student is in attendance for 3 hours and 15 minutes. If a child is going to be absent from school, parents may call the office, or should send the signed note the first day the student returns. Parents should contact their child's teacher if the absence covers an extended period of time.

Parents can request excused absences for their children for religious reasons prior to the date of the observance. Family vacations do not count as excused absences. The NCWise Data Manager and guidance counselor will monitor excessive absences. Students, who have accumulated 6 and 10 unexcused questionable absences, will have a letter sent to their parents. Excessive tardies will also be monitored. Teachers, who have concerns about specific students, should notify the office.

At the elementary level, Policy #6000.7 states, “excused and unexcused absences above 30 are excessive. Students, who exceed 30 absences during the year, will be referred to an attendance committee that will determine if the student should be retained.”

Students who arrive at school after 7:45 a.m. must sign in at the office. They will receive a late slip and be admitted to class.

Cafeteria:

The cafeteria is open to all students, staff and parents who wish to eat with their children. Each student has been assigned a number for a pre-paid account, so students do not need to carry cash every day. Prices for the 2002-2003 school year are as follows:

Student Breakfast-Reduced
.30
Student Breakfast-Full .80
Student Lunch-Reduced .40
Student Lunch-Full 1.75
Milk .50

Money for student lunch accounts should be turned into the office during homeroom. Checks turned in may not be processed until after the child's lunchtime that day. To avoid problems, please monitor the child's account and turn the money in the day before it will be needed.

Students who do not have lunch or money in their accounts will be given vegetables. It is requested that parents do not bring fast food to lunch for their children. Canned drinks are also discouraged.

Adults who eat can purchase items a la carte.

Tables for each grade level have been set up for forgotten lunches to be dropped off.

Need a menu? Here it is.

Birthday celebrations are not permitted in the classroom since they are not part of the curriculum. However, if a parent wishes to commemorate a child’s birthday, they may bring cake, cupcakes, or cookies to the cafeteria and serve the treats to the children in the child’s class. (By the same token, birthday invitations or other party invitations are only permitted to be distributed in the classroom (before school begins) and only if ALL the children in the class are invited. If only a select number of children are invited to a party, the parent must mail the invitations (this will prevent hurt feelings).)

Dismissal:

Students are dismissed at 2:15. Parents should not pick students up from school at their classrooms or in the hallways outside the classrooms. This practice disrupts the learning environment. Instead, parents should come to the office, and the office staff will call for the child to come to the office.

Car-poolers will be brought to the designated area, by a staff member, and released to parents at that time. K-1 students exit out the parking lot side of the school while 2-5 students exit the main entrance. K-1 carpoolers are asked to use Collins Drive, and 2-5 carpoolers should use Davis Drive.

Bus-riders will be brought to the bus loading area, by a staff member, and boarded in an orderly fashion. Due to the number of students who ride the buses in Wake County, it is requested that no student ride a bus other than the one to which he/she has been assigned. If your child wishes to go home with another student, please make transportation arrangements other than the bus. Davis Drive's buses are being routed through Green Hope Transportation. Bus-related concerns can be addressed by calling 380-3690.

Day care students will report to the area outside of the gym and be dismissed by the staff member on duty.

Extended day students will report to the cafeteria at dismissal.

When changes are made in the way a child normally goes home, a note from the parent is required.

In order for dismissal to run smoothly, please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended in the bus parking lot, the car pool loop in the front of the building, and the staff parking lot in front of the K-1 exit AND the gym. All of these areas have heavy traffic, and one car can create a major backup. Thank you.

Dress Code:

Students are not permitted to wear thin strapped tops or tops that expose the middle, short shorts, droopy pants, shirts with inappropriate messages (for example: shirts advertising beer would not be appropriate) or anything that might cause a disturbance to the learning environment. Students who are inappropriately attired, will be requested to leave and return to school with more suitable clothing.

Check the complete dress code policy at the Wake County Site.

Early Release:

Requests for early dismissal should be submitted in writing to the child's teacher. Sending a note to your child's teacher can often times help get the child to the office to meet you on time. It also helps the teacher plan for missed work, and arrange some important parts of the day around the child's absence. It is requested that early dismissals are not scheduled between 1:45 and 2:15, as this is a busy time for the office and classes.

Forgotten Items:

Students who forget items at home, whether it is homework, materials, lunch, or others, will not be allowed to call home. Parents who realize an item was left at home may bring the item to school. Lunches should be placed in the cafeteria, on the table marked with the appropriate grade level. Other items may be given to the secretaries, to be placed in the teacher's mailbox. Students may or may not receive these items in time to use them. Parents MUST NOT go to a child's classroom and disrupt the instructional lesson.

Handbook:

The student handbook is being created, and we hope to post it here soon.

Media Center:

The Media Center will be open a few weeks into the school year.

Medication:

School staff are not allowed to dispense over the counter medications at school. Prescription medication that is to be taken at school must be brought by the parent in the original prescription botton and form 1702 (to be completed by a physician) must be completed. These forms are available in the front office. The form must be given to the office before the medication can be given. Over the counter medication must be accompanied by a Parent Request/Physician Order. Nonprescription medicine must be labeled with the child’s name, name of the medication, the correct dosage, and the directions.

Registration:

To register your child for school, bring the following items to the front office: the child's birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency (this includes a recent bill from a power company, cable, etc.) and the Social Security Number.

Security:

In order to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff, ALL outside doors except for the main entrance will be locked. ALL visitors MUST report to the front office by entering through the front door. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made. After signing in at the front office, the visitor will be given a Visitor Sticker to be displayed clearly. Without this sticker, you will be asked to leave the building. Please do not open the doors for anyone who is knocking. This completely destroys the entire concept of the security system.

Volunteers:

All visitors must sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge while spending time in the building. If you are volunteering in the classrooms, you must stop by the Media Center and enter yourself in the WCPSS Volunteer Registration System.
